Alexandra Burke wins Star Baker

Alexandra Burke
crowned Star Baker
in cracking first episode

Singer Alexandra Burke has been crowned Star Baker in the first cracker of an episode of The Great Stand Up To Cancer Bake Off.

The four celebrities were tasked with showing off their baking prowess in three separate challenges. The first to get them going was the Signature Bake including 12 portions of millionaire's shortbreads, the Technical upped the ante with four individual vegan chocolate and raspberry tarts, and a final Showstopper saw the bakers creating a 3D cake representing their biggest 'bug bear'.

Daisy Ridley went for an interesting toilet-based creation, showing her annoyance at those who leave the seat up. When Paul asked how she made the sponge, she said: “I put it in a bowl and I whisked it.” Paul asked “For how long?” to which she responded with a very clear: “Some … few … moments...”. Tom's Car Horn cake, despite looking like an abstract piece of art, received positive comments from Prue and Paul in a surprising turnaround from his difficult first few rounds.

Overall, it was a close call between Alexandra and Rob Beckett, who surprised viewers with his skills, winning a Hollywood Handshake for one of his earlier baking challenges.

Alexandra stood head and shoulders above the other stars though, managing to win the Technical before whipping up a storm of a Showstopper, wowing the judges with her 'Clean Sheets' cake (minus the shortbread headboard, which sadly didn't go down too well). The Showstopping success saw a delighted Alexandra win the much sought after prize of a Star Baker apron. Get yours before they fly off the shelves and do your bit to fund life-saving research.

Tune into next week's episode with yet more mishaps, surprises and a whole load of baking goodness from a new batch of celebrities. This Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
