crowned star baker

Actor James McAvoy, Olympian Dame Kelly Holmes, singer Anne-Marie and comic David Baddiel made the second episode of The Great Stand Up To Cancer Bake Off go off with a bang. With decorative tarts and animal-themed cakes on the menu, the nation watched as Dame Kelly and James were neck and neck in clinching the Star Baker title.

The first Signature Bake came as a surprise to some of the celebrities, whose lack of preparedness was apparent from the start. Dame Kelly Holmes admitted she had never baked in her life, while Anne-Marie showed her competitive side. She looked like she was having a wonderful time as her fellow celebs became anxious amid the chaos.

The next round, The Technical, showed a litte improvement from the celebs, with some impressive buttermilk cheese scone baking. As confusion filled the tent about when to take their scones out of the oven, the bakers turned to observing each other for inspiration.

Then came the Showstoppers, where constestants were tasked with baking a 3D marble cake which represents them in animal form.

As a bit of a baking novice, James Mcavoy admitted he had been "freediving into baking in fear and preparation for the show". As he pulled out all the stops with his final bake, the Pina Colada flavoured Snow Leopard cake, the judges were clearly impressed with his tribute to His Dark Materials. Paul Hollywood described the cake as "surprisingly good", ultimately landing him the coveted Star Baker apron.

Fans watched on as James' skills progressed, flooding social media after his outstanding performance in the tent.
