Why should I support World Cancer Day?

1 in 2 people in the UK will get cancer at some point in their life time. Cancer Research UK's ground-breaking research is helping bring new treatments to people with cancer and saving lives. But we can't do it without you. Every World Cancer Day Unity Band sold helps raise vital funds for life-saving research.

Stand Up To Cancer for people like Laura and Nicky

Laura and Nicky understand how important it is for everyone to join forces and unite against cancer.

Laura was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. After having a mastectomy and chemotherapy, she recovered. However, in 2016 she learned that the cancer had spread to her bones. Nicky was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018, receiving the news just one week later that it had also spread to her bones and was incurable.

The pair met by chance at a cancer support group event in 2019. A few months later they set up Secondary Sisters on Instagram – creating a safe space to share and connect with other women living with secondary cancer. Each week they share cancer information, updates and personal stories. They want to let other women with secondary breast cancer know they’re not alone.

“We’re supporting World Cancer Day this year as we know it’s so important for everyone to come together.”

Since setting up Secondary Sisters, Nicky and Laura have become inseparable. They speak to each other almost every day, despite living almost 3 hours away from each other.

“Our advice this World Cancer Day is to link up and find that support from somebody out there.”
