The second set of bakers, Laura Whitmore, Gareth Malone, Yung Filly and Ruby Wax took on three separate challenges in attempt to win Star Baker. First up was the Signature where bakers were tasked with creating decorated fruit turnovers. Next up was the Technical, which saw the bakers creating chocolate fondants in exactly one hour.
In the final task, the Showstopper, the bakers created a meringue that represented their most embarrassing moment. Ruby created the moment she set Bill Gates’ left eyebrow alight, complete with sparklers, with the judges saying her cappuccino meringue had a beautiful flavour. Yung Filly’s ‘kiss that missed’ meringue received positive comments, with Paul saying he’d ‘Have that with cream any day’. Laura created the moment she fell off the stage in her Christmas nativity and impressed the judges with her attention to detail and chocolate orange flavoured star of Bethlehem.
In the end, Gareth Malone won the coveted Star Baker apron, having earnt a Hollywood handshake for his turnovers and impressing with his memory of falling in the school pond, made with a combination of French and Italian meringue. Gareth said ‘Thank you! We’ve raised money and it feels really, really good.’
Tune in next week to see more baking fabs and fails in with Annie Mac, Example, Ed Gamble and the Bake Off’s very own Matt Lucas.
